How Much Fidya Per Missed Fast? Local Rates

What “one Fidya” means in the Quran and Hadith, how communities convert it to cash, and why there is no honest global price tag.

The Direct Answer: Fidya Per Day

For each missed Ramadan fast covered by lasting inability, the classical duty is to feed one needy person (Quran 2:184; Sahih al-Bukhari 4505). Modern cash figures are usually a local conversion of that—often framed as about two modest meals or a Saʿ of staple food. Multiply that unit cost by the number of days. We do not publish a fake worldwide PKR or USD Fidya rate.

Per-day formula:

Local meal/staple equivalent × Missed days = Total Fidya

Illustrative only (not a live rate):

  • Suppose your city's two-meal equivalent is about $8
  • Days of lasting inability: 15
  • Total: 15 × $8 = $120

Replace $8 with whatever your mosque or council announces this year. Full who-pays detail: Fidya calculation rules.

The Quranic Basis for Fidya

The Quran names Fidya as feeding a poor person for those who can only fast with extreme hardship—the textual root of the per-day food obligation.

"And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]."

— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:184)

The Hadith Clarifying Fidya

Ibn Abbas explained that this ruling remains for the elderly who cannot fast—feeding one needy person for each day.

"It is not abrogated. It is for the old man and the old woman who are not able to fast, so they should feed a poor person for each day."

— Sahih al-Bukhari 4505

One person fed—not a universal dollar

The Sharia unit is food for one needy person per missed day. Cash is a practical bridge when councils price that food. Meal costs in Lahore, London, and Lagos are not the same; publishing one “2026 worldwide Fidya” figure as if it were Prophetic is misleading. Ask:

  • Does the announced amount cover one meal, two meals, or a Saʿ of wheat/rice?
  • Is it for your city this year?
  • Will the charity actually feed eligible recipients?

Then use the Fidya calculator with your local unit cost.

Who uses Fidya vs Qada?

Fidya fits lasting inability (frailty, chronic illness where makeup is not realistic). Temporary illness, travel, menstruation, and many pregnancy/breastfeeding cases call for Qada (makeup fasts)—paying Fidya does not cancel Qada when makeup is possible. Full criteria: Fidya calculation rules. For deliberate breaking of a fast without excuse, see Fidya vs Kaffarah—Kaffarah is a heavier penalty, not a cheap “buy-out.”

How to find a trustworthy local rate

  1. Check your mosque's Ramadan notice or national fatwa council circular.
  2. Prefer sources that state food vs cash and what the cash covers.
  3. If two reputable charities differ slightly, many people choose the higher figure cautiously; if they differ wildly, ask an imam which standard your community follows.
  4. Paying abroad: the meal cost should match where the food is provided, not necessarily your home restaurant prices.

Partial months and changing health

Fidya applies only to days of lasting inability. If you recover and can fast later, stop using Fidya for future days and make up what you can. Days already covered by Fidya for permanent inability are generally left as fulfilled for those days—confirm messy timelines with a scholar. Caregivers may pay from the elderly person's wealth or as a gift to help them discharge the duty.

You may also pay day by day as each fast is missed, or as a lump sum at the start or end of Ramadan. Earlier payment often helps recipients during the blessed month. Paying after Ramadan can still clear a genuine Fidya duty, but avoid needless delay.

Why “two meals” appears in modern guidance

Classical language is feeding a miskin (needy person). Many councils estimate what it costs to provide a full day's modest food—often described as breakfast and dinner, or a Saʿ of wheat—then publish that as the cash Fidya. That estimate is a conversion tool, not a second Sharia rate. If your community still prefers distributing actual food, follow that; if they accept cash at the published meal equivalent, use that figure in the Fidya tool.

Never “average” three countries' Facebook graphics into one number. Prefer a single authoritative local source for the year you are paying.

Fidya is mercy—not a shortcut for the able

Choosing not to fast while healthy and then paying Fidya as a month-long buy-out is not the concession the Quran describes. Fidya protects those who cannot fast or make up. Able adults who miss days owe Qada; deliberate breaking without excuse may require Kaffarah. Read Fidya vs Kaffarah and who pays Fidya before you settle on an amount.

Practical checklist

  1. Confirm Fidya (lasting) vs Qada (temporary) vs Kaffarah (deliberate break).
  2. Get a local per-day meal/staple amount—not a random global chart.
  3. Multiply by missed days covered by lasting inability.
  4. Distribute through a trusted channel; keep a simple record.
