Understanding Nisab in Islamic Jurisprudence

Nisab is the minimum net amount of wealth a Muslim must possess for a full lunar year (Hawl) before becoming obligated to pay Zakat. If your net Zakatable assets remain equal to or above this cutoff, you are required to pay 2.5% of your total qualifying assets to eligible recipients.

Gold vs Silver Nisab: Which Threshold Should You Use?

Silver Standard (612.36g / 52.5 Tola)

The vast majority of classical Hanafi scholars recommend using the silver threshold when you own mixed assets (cash, savings, business stock, gold, silver). Because silver has a lower monetary value, it benefits the poor by bringing more people into the circle of giving.

Gold Standard (87.48g / 7.5 Tola)

If an individual only owns gold and has no cash savings, business assets, or silver, they assess their liability solely against the gold threshold of 7.5 Tola.
