Calculation Methodology
Transparency is a core principle in Islamic finance. This page explains the specific Fiqh (jurisprudence) positions underlying our calculators.
Zakat Calculator Methodology
Our Zakat calculator primarily follows the mainstream Hanafi school of thought, which represents the majority practice in South Asia, Turkey, and many Western communities.
1. Nisab Threshold
The Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth requiring Zakat. Convert weights to cash with your local metal prices on our Nisab Calculator. We use traditional measurements:
- Gold: 87.48 grams (7.5 Tola)
- Silver: 612.36 grams (52.5 Tola)
As recommended by contemporary scholars, if a person possesses both gold and silver (or cash and other assets), the lower Silver Nisab is applied to benefit the poor and needy.
2. Zakat on Jewelry
In the Hanafi school, Zakat is obligatory on all gold and silver jewelry, regardless of whether it is worn daily or kept in a safe. This differs from the Shafi'i and Maliki schools, which generally exempt jewelry used for personal wear. Our calculator assumes the Hanafi position, prompting users to input all jewelry weight.
3. Retirement Accounts (401k / Pensions)
Zakat is calculated only on the accessible portion of retirement funds. We advise users to deduct expected taxes and early withdrawal penalties before entering the final accessible amount into the calculator.
Faraid (Inheritance) Methodology
Our Faraid calculator uses a robust rules engine that strictly implements the fractional shares detailed in Surah An-Nisa (Verses 11, 12, and 176) and authentic Hadith.
1. Primary Heirs (Zawil Furud)
The engine first assigns fixed shares to the primary heirs (spouses, parents, daughters when there are no sons). The calculator handles complex scenarios like "Al-Awl" (when shares exceed the whole) by proportionally reducing all shares according to consensus rulings.
2. Residuary Heirs (Asabah)
After the fixed shares are distributed, the remaining estate goes to the residuary heirs (usually sons, who bring their sisters into this category). The rule of "the male receives the share of two females" is applied mathematically here.
3. Blocking (Hajb)
The calculator automatically resolves blocking rules (e.g., a son blocks grandsons and brothers; a father blocks brothers). This ensures that only entitled heirs receive a share.
Ushr (Agricultural Zakat) Methodology
Calculate your farm obligations with our Ushr calculator. Ushr is calculated based on the method of irrigation:
- 10% (Full Ushr): Crops irrigated naturally by rain or rivers.
- 5% (Half Ushr): Crops irrigated artificially (tubewells, purchased water, mechanical means).
The minimum threshold (Nisab) for Ushr is 5 Wasqs, which contemporary scholars estimate to be approximately 653 kilograms of the crop.
