What Is Hawl? Zakat’s Lunar Year Rule
Why Zakat waits for a lunar year of ownership above Nisab—and how schools treat mid-year dips.
The Direct Answer: What is Hawl?
Hawl (حَوْل) is one full Islamic lunar year during which you own Zakatable wealth at or above the Nisab threshold. Crossing Nisab for a week and then spending it down does not, by itself, create an immediate annual Zakat bill the way a completed Hawl does under classical rules.
After Hawl completes (and you are still obligated under your school’s checkpoints), you typically pay 2.5% on net Zakatable assets. See the full calculation flow in How to calculate Zakat step by step.

Zakat Purifies Wealth
The Quran frames taking Zakat from wealth as purification and growth—not a random tax date on the solar calendar:
"Take, [O Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing."
— Surah At-Tawbah (9:103)
Spend from Pure Earnings
Hawl applies to wealth that remains with you; the duty to spend from what you earn supports the wider ethic of not letting surplus sit idle without purification:
"O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth."
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:267)
Lunar year, not Gregorian year
An Islamic lunar year is about 354 or 355 days—roughly 10–11 days shorter than a solar year. Classical fiqh ties Hawl to that lunar cycle. Using only a January–December tax year without any lunar awareness can drift your anniversary over time. Many Muslims pick a Hijri date (or the Gregorian date that matched their first Nisab day) and stick to it every year, recalculating metal prices and balances on that anniversary.
Crops and some agricultural dues follow harvest rules rather than a personal cash Hawl; this article focuses on monetary and trade wealth where Hawl is central.
When does the clock start?
Common teaching: the Hawl clock for a category of wealth starts when you first own at least Nisab of Zakatable assets (after debts, per your school). New money that joins an existing Hawl is often folded into the same anniversary in Hanafi summaries; other schools discuss separate clocks for new acquisitions. Practical tip: keep one primary Zakat date for household cash and gold unless a scholar tells you to split categories.
Hanafi vs Shafi‘i (and Hanbali) on mid-year dips
This is the most asked Hawl question—and schools genuinely differ (same pattern as our Nisab article):
- Hanafi (common summary): Check at the beginning and end of your Zakat year. If you are above Nisab on those checkpoints, many mid-year fluctuations below Nisab are overlooked; the Hawl does not automatically reset every time the balance dips.
- Shafi‘i / Hanbali (common summary): Wealth should remain above Nisab throughout the year. Falling below can interrupt or reset the Hawl, so the anniversary may shift.
- Maliki: Has its own formulations on continuity and growth; do not assume Hanafi leniency or Shafi‘i strictness by default.
These are teaching summaries, not fatwas. If your balance swings around Nisab every month, ask a Mufti who follows your madhhab rather than switching schools to delay payment.
How Hawl fits the calculation
- Know your Nisab in cash terms on the assessment day.
- Confirm Hawl conditions for your school (continuous vs start/end).
- List assets and debts (step-by-step guide).
- Pay 2.5% if obligated; give to eligible Asnaf.
Paying early for convenience is sometimes discussed as valid with conditions; paying late after Hawl without excuse is a serious matter in classical ethics. Use the Zakat calculator on your chosen date—not randomly mid-year with stale prices.
Practical anniversary tips
- Write the date in your calendar and phone (Hijri + Gregorian).
- Export bank and brokerage statements for that day.
- Update gold/silver prices the same day via Nisab.
- Do not invent Hadith numbers or “secret shortcuts” that cancel Hawl without proof.
We intentionally do not attach an unverified Hadith number to “Zakat is yearly” here. The lunar-year ownership rule is standard across classical fiqh manuals; for narration chains, rely on authenticated collections and qualified teachers—not invented citations.
Salary, gifts, and sudden windfalls
Monthly salary that you spend before your anniversary often never sits as Zakatable surplus; what remains in savings on the Hawl date does. A large gift or inheritance that pushes you above Nisab for the first time typically starts (or restarts) your consideration of Hawl from that point—exact treatment of “new wealth joining old wealth” is a classic madhhab discussion. If your only Zakatable asset is a single bonus that you immediately give away in Sadaqah, you may never complete a Hawl on it; if you park it for a lunar year above Nisab, the duty can crystallize.
Couples sometimes share a household anniversary for simplicity when finances are pooled; others keep separate dates for separate accounts. Neither approach replaces a fatwa when ownership is disputed (for example dowry gold, or money held for adult children).
