Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana): Rules & Who Pays

A clear guide to Fitrana at the end of Ramadan: who is obligated, the Sa' measure, local cash rates, and when to pay so the needy can celebrate Eid.

The Direct Answer: Who Pays Fitrana?

Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is due from every Muslim who has excess beyond what is needed for Eid day—not only from the wealthy. There is no gold/silver Nisab like annual wealth Zakat. The Prophet ﷺ enjoined one Sa' of dates or barley (or equivalent staple) on every Muslim, young or old, male or female (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503). Cash figures are local conversions of that staple—never a single global rate.

Quick checklist:

  • Count yourself and dependents you support (spouse, children—details by school)
  • Amount: 1 Sa' staple food per person, or your mosque's cash equivalent this year
  • Timing: aim to deliver before the Eid prayer so recipients can use it on Eid

Compare with wealth Zakat in Zakat al-Mal vs Zakat al-Fitr. Use the Fitrana calculator with your local per-person rate.

The Quranic Context: Ramadan & Ease

Fitrana closes the month of fasting. The Quran frames Ramadan as a time of guidance, completing the count of fasts, and thanking Allah—then the community celebrates Eid with generosity to those in need.

"The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the crescent of] the month, let him fast it."

— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185)

The Hadith on Zakat al-Fitr

The Prophet ﷺ made Fitrana obligatory on every Muslim at the end of Ramadan—slave or free, male or female, young or old—measured in a Sa' of staple food.

"Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) enjoined the payment of one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old."

— Sahih al-Bukhari 1503

Who pays Zakat al-Fitr?

The duty tracks surplus beyond Eid-day needs, not a wealth Nisab. In practice:

  • Every Muslim who has more food (or means) than needed for themselves and dependents on Eid day typically owes Fitrana.
  • The head of household usually pays for self, spouse, and children they support. Adult earners may pay for themselves.
  • Children and newborns: Bukhari 1503 includes the young. Exact cutoffs for a baby born near Eid dawn vary by school—ask your local mosque.
  • Someone in genuine need may receive Fitrana rather than give it.

Schools differ on whether cash is preferred over food (Hanafi practice often allows cash; others may prefer food staples). Follow a trusted local Mufti for mixed households and guest situations. For how this differs from 2.5% wealth Zakat, see Zakat al-Mal vs Zakat al-Fitr.

How much? One Sa'—cash is local

The Prophetic measure is one Sa' of dates, barley, or another accepted staple per person. A Sa' is a volume measure; modern councils convert it into kilograms of wheat/rice/dates or into currency using this year's local prices.

There is no authentic worldwide PKR or USD Fitrana rate. A figure from one country's council does not bind another. Ask your mosque or national Islamic body for the announced per-person amount, then multiply by household members in the Fitrana tool.

When is Fitrana due?

Fitrana is linked to the end of Ramadan and Eid. The preferred practice is to give it so the poor can use it on Eid day—commonly before the Eid prayer. Many communities collect earlier in Ramadan so food or cash reaches recipients in time. Delaying past the prayer without necessity is widely discouraged; late payment is often treated as ordinary Sadaqah rather than fulfilling the timely Fitrana virtue.

Plan during Ramadan: note household size, get the local rate, and pay through a trusted channel before Eid morning.

Purpose and recipients

Classical aims include purifying the fasting person and feeding the needy for Eid. Recipients are especially the poor and needy; some schools discuss a narrower set than the eight categories of wealth Zakat. Prefer channels that actually deliver food or usable funds before Eid.

Practical checklist

  1. Confirm you have surplus beyond Eid-day needs.
  2. List everyone you will pay for (self + dependents).
  3. Get this year's local Sa'/cash rate—not a random internet “global” figure.
  4. Pay via the Fitrana calculator estimate and a trusted distributor.
  5. Aim for delivery before the Eid prayer.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Fitrana as optional “tips” while skipping it because you already paid wealth Zakat—they are separate duties.
  • Using last year's foreign cash figure instead of this year's local staple cost.
  • Waiting until after Eid prayer without a valid reason.
  • Forgetting dependents you support, or counting short-term guests who are not your responsibility.

Cash vs food, and paying early

Hanafi practice commonly allows paying the cash equivalent of the staple; other schools may emphasize distributing food. Either way, the Prophetic measure remains the Sa' (Bukhari 1503). Paying earlier in Ramadan is widely accepted so organizations can buy and deliver before Eid—especially useful if you will travel for Eid prayer. Coordinate so recipients still receive benefit for the festival, not weeks later.

If you cannot afford Fitrana, classical discussions allow receiving it rather than giving it. That is the opposite of wealth Zakat's Nisab gate: Fitrana tracks surplus for Eid, not gold thresholds. See also the Ramadan hub for related tools and timing.
